Energy is energy. In one sense, it makes no difference who you buy your power from. One company’s power won’t make your light bulbs shine brighter than another company’s. No one sells commercial electricity is that is “new and improved”. There are no scents, colors, flavors or styles to choose from. Regardless of who you contract with for your business electricity, the same thing is going to happen when you flip a light switch—the lights will turn on.
This leaves a fair amount of folks with the impression that all commercial electricity options are, ultimately, the same. That, however, could not be further from the truth.
The biggest difference, and one you’re sure to take note of, is the price. Commercial electricity is the same product no matter who you buy it from—it’s electrons moving along the power lines, making all your cool tech toys come to life when you plug them in. But that’s only half the story.
Business electricity can be sold with a variable rate (a rate that changes based on the market) or a fixed rate (the price is the same per kWh throughout the contract term). This much you likely already know. But power can also be sold based on the MCPE (market clearing price of energy), heat rates and several different elaborate combinations of these variables. Furthermore, you can specify that you want a percentage of your business electricity to be renewable (or “green”). Contract terms (the length of the contract) come in all flavors, too, from as short as a few months to as long as 5 years.
Each of these options represents a different pricing structure, and a different bottom-line impact on your organization. Should you lock in the lowest possible fixed rate for the longest possible time frame? Maybe. Or maybe an MCPE or heat rate product would fit your company better.
Are you planning for future growth? Do you expect downsizing? Do you have multiple locations or do you use your power only seasonally? Each of these possibilities will affect the price. Whatever option you go with, the lights will come on when you flip the switch. The real difference is this: how much will you be paying to make the lights come on?
